When Apple released what’s new with iphone 4,one of the major new selling features was that the phone would come fully unlocked out of the box. So as a Canadian heading down to the United States I find myself wanting to use my phone. I would normally pay outrageous roaming rates if I used my own sim card. Where do I obtain a micro sim card capable of running my iphone 4. Is the only place to get it AT&T where I will have to sign a contract and pay monthly fees or can they be purchased elsewhere? If so, are they affordable and what kind of minutes are pre loaded onto them? Thanks
Basically go to an ATT store or to their website (do NOT mention you have an iPhone) and just say you want to purchase a plan(s) for voice (if you need) and data. You may need to change the APN on your phone to avoid detection for using a non-iPhone data plan with your phone, check this link for details on how to do that.
The obvious problem with both carriers is the micro-sim. It may not be a problem if you are willing to cut it up to fit in the iPhone but still, getting a sim could be the biggest hang-up. AT&T will have the appropriate sim but a rep will not give one to you without a data package and an account.
