It’s very annoying because i always think something is broke in it. It’s reading an writing perfectly just that sound…
I have opened my old disfunctional WD HDD (not My passport) and dicscovered small plastic box with tiny (grain size) balls inside, glued to a back plate of the HDD. It was definitely the source of the rattling noise when shaken. It seems like it’s magnetic. But I don’t know what purpose it serves… It just sat there… That means when you shake your HDD and makes rattling noise, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s broken. This is it:
