When I load a VHS cassete into the tv it makes a whirring noise , some scrambly picture shows up for a brief second and then the tv shuts off. the rest of the tv is fine, but the vhs part doesn’t seem to work.
It could be the tape you are trying is damaged. Try a different tape. Could be the VCR is dirty and needs cleaning. Try placing a tape in player and ff to the end of tape, then rewind all the way. Then try playing again. If tape inst moving , it could also mean a belt broke or fell off inside,
