Hi all. So I am trying to repair this iMac for the friend of a friend. Here are the details. The guy opened it up a while ago to clean out the fans and stuff, plugged everything back in (the screen) and when he turned it back on, the screen came on, but was only black, the Mac bong/chime sounded, and he smelt something burning. He didn’t know what to do, so it sat there for a while. Then he hears from my friend that I work on PCs and some Macs, and asks me to have a look. I get the mac, plug it in, the chime sounds, screen comes on (powered) but only shows black. I know the logic board is working (at least for the most part) because when I reset the PRAM i get the chime as many times as I want, and the PRAM is resetting, no errors. So i open her up, and sure enough, there is some heat damage around the LVDS port. I see the reason, the guy didn’t seat the cable in properly when he put it back together the first time. The damage doesn’t seem to be too bad. But it does look like a capacitor/fuse/”filter?” has burn to the point where the solder has melted, and it fell off. (pictures attached) And one that seems to have a little heat damage, but is still in place.

If you guys could help me out that would be great! What is the component? (is it a fuse, a capacitor etc) and how should i go about fixing it? And yes, I did try plugging the screen in again with all of the cables correctly seated. and all was the same.

Thank you all in advance for your help!!! :-)

Ouch! Sorry to tell you the display cable was inserted backwards! This damage is quite severe some of the copper traces have been damaged besides the visible damaged parts.

So you’ll need to find someone else who has the skills to fix the logic board or get a replacement logic board. This person owes you for their mistake!
