Hi, I have a 2014 5K iMac with 512GB SSD (PCIe). I would like to remove this blade SSD and put NVMe drive with an adapter instead. What is the maximum capacity of NVMe this iMac would recognise? I was thinking to use 4TB. CheersAddie
I really don’t recommend M.2 blade SSD’s in iMac’s, while they will appear to work day one, it will prematurely fail! The issue is Apple’s connecter has a few extra lines the adapter and M.2 SSD don’t have. These lines are part of the housekeeping logic Apple uses as well as TRIM services. Now as far as size I would stick with 2 TB, here’s what I would put in iMac Intel 27" (Late 2013-Mid 2015) Blade SSD Upgrade Bundle But before you make such a big jump what is your workflow? I often find people over do the blade SSD when using two drives would be better. I’m a photographer working on ultra large images when I’m working (pre-COVID). I use my systems blade SSD as my boot drive and holding my apps. Most of the rest of the drive is empty! That way the OS and Apps have breathing room and I setup the scratch space for it. This gets the best bang for the buck. My work sits on external RAID drive hanging off my Mac Pro. Here using your SATA interface will be workable too for your data. Many systems I setup for video and music students are setup this same way (just a smaller 1TB blade and 4 TB SATA SSD.
