The ‘Official’ answer is 8gb, however I have 16gb in mine and it’s just fine! I read around plenty on the internet and found a number of discussions where people had done this so I took the plunge and bought a kit specifically for my Early 2011 MBP 17" that had 2x8gb 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM modules in it and voila!
