Hello! I bought my MacBook Pro in 2012 and recently the hard drive has began to fail. I am looking to replace the hard drive but I don’t know what is best. I was referred to newegg.com to look for one… Ideally, I’d like it to be new (not used) and around the $100 range. If you could suggest a good brand or even just give me some information about what to look for, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Here is the info about my computer: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB Startup Disk: Macintosh HD
First, take it in to an ASP and ask for the free hard drive/IR cable replacement. (Call first to make sure they are aware of the program). Then see if your hard drive is actually failing. It’s always a good idea to have an external Time Machine backup of your hard drive data before taking it in for repair anywhere.
I would go with a Seagate SSHD (ST1000LX001) You should be able to get one for just under $100 US This drive will give you quicker boot up and with the 32 GB SSD cache (this is the better model) offer enough space to hold a program or two making it much faster than a typical HD. Here’s the seagate web site: Seagate Laptop SSHD). But before you make this jump you may in fact have another problem! This series has a known problem with its HD drive cable. I would first see if you can get it replaced. Apple has been replacing the cables for free!
