So my son dropped his iPhone 6 into the toilet at school. He said he snatched it right back out, but of course the damage was done and the phone went off and wouldn’t power back on. This was before I got into trying to fix things myself, so into a drawer the phone went, just the way it was. Is there any way of actually making this phone work again? What parts will be damaged by the water and what parts can I salvage from it to use on future repairs if I try to fix another iPhone 6?
@tbro387 there really are no specific parts that get damage by liquid immersion. It could be any one of the componentes. You’d determine which parts are damaged by what works after a proper cleaning etc. Using parts from a water damage device always carries a risk of not knowing if it is a failed/damaged part. You would have to proceed just like you would with any other water damaged device. In the case of your phone I’d proceed the usual way. Disassemble your phone using these guides. You must remove all the EMI shields of the logic board. If you do not remove those you are not cleaning 3/4 of the board. Clean everything with +90% (no less than 90%) isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide, and even so it was written for a 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. Pay particular attention to the SMD components, check for charred missing or broken missing. You can then dry the board in an oven or equivalent at 220deg F (not higher;-) for a few hours. Best way to clean it would of course be through an ultrasonic cleaner. Once it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. After that reassemble your phone and reevaluate. Hope this helps, good luck
