Hey guys, I’m not quite sure what I should do. I’m new to the site and I want to make sure I make the right purchase. Firstly, I love my laptop, my son drop coke on my 17 inch mac book pro (mid 2009 version) a few years ago, I’ve been using it just fine only that some keys I tried cleaning and I accidentally broke the connectors. I’m literately typing without some of the keys now, looks bad but not bothering that much. There are some keys that are perfectly fine when pressing down such as the letter “p” but instead of writing “p” it rights other characters like “-” or “]” or “i”. Sometimes it does actually write “p” but its rare. My initial thoughts were to replace the keyboard, but than I thought about it some more, and did some reading, and it seems like I may have to replace the entire Logic board ($699). Replacement keys are cheap so I’m not so worried there. I’ve taken the laptop apart and put it back together to clean the Coke that lay on the board, and put it back together sucessfully a long time ago so I’m confident that I can do this. A few questions.
- Does anyone know if this is the logic board? Or perhaps the keyboard assembly is the culprit.
- IFIXIT doesn’t have the the keyboard for mid 2009 models but does for 2010 and up. Will it be backwards compatible? Appreciate all the help. Thanks Will
Sounds more like the keyboard than the logic board. I would suggest that you clean the logic board with isopropyl alcohol anyway, but replace the keyboard. For now, use a USB keyboard and see if that allows you to type properly, If it does, you know your logic board is ok. the cleaning is to prevent corrosion in the future.
This is the problem with reading things on the internet, they are almost always WRONG! You need a logic board if you have logic board damage. if just a few keys are not typing properly, you need a keyboard. Unless you spilled and corroded U5701, which would make you very unlucky. Just buy a new keyboard and replace it. Watch out for the $17 ebay $@$* that have fingerprints and oils and spicy sauce on them from the used nasty laptops they were pulled out of.
