Hi, my right usb port stopped working on my 15 inch 2013 late Macbook Pro. I saw that it’s possible to replace the port itself, along with HDMI and card reader (I/O board), but both HDMI and Card reader work. Also, the USB port does send some power to the device connected but there’s no data coming through. I am slightly worried that the problem might be more down the line, and I got a quote from a repair shop for over 220 Euros, and they said the’ll have to solder some tricky stuff, which got me even more worried. Other USB port is working perfectly.

Any opinions on this problem? Thanks in advance.

Try a SMC reset. Shutdown your MacBook Pro.Connect the charger to the Mac.On the MacBook Pro’s keyboard, hold down the Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time.Release all keys and the power button at the same time – the little indicator on the MagSafe charger may change colors briefly to indicate the SMC has reset.Boot your Mac normally. Also try giving it a clean out with an air compressor if you have one. If you don’t have an air compressor, lightly swipe a Q-TIP inside of the USB port carefully, if you’re not careful, you may damage one of the contacts inside the USB port, completely disabling it. Hope I could help.

How about checking the port using a USB meter like this one USB Mini Voltmeter You might want to try first replacing the MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) I/O Board Data Cable, then you’ve proven the issue is the MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Right I/O Board. Hi Dan, i’m troubleshooting a MPBr 15" Late 2013 from which i suspect a faulty IO-board connector. After a SMC-reset the USB-port works, SD card reader doesn’t (haven’t tried HDMI). Also randomly the Flex cable gets hot to the touch (which indicates shorting?). I’ve noticed that the metal shielding on the IO-board is loose on one side, this is used for grounding i presume? Can this be the cause of the issues i’m seeing? Before i’m ordering all the parts you’ve mentioned i’d like to pinpoint it a bit more. The issues started after i’ve replaced the 7-year old battery. I haven’t checked the IO-board datacable on the Logicboard side. Should i check this? Does the Flexcable go bad as easily as the datacable does?
