I have a very specific question about upgrading a 2009 Mac Pro from a single CPU to a dual CPU. I want to do this upgrade a little bit at a time, since the parts are kind of expensive. My single processor is a 6-core 3.33. If I start by replacing my processor tray with a dual tray, can I run the dual tray with only one CPU installed? For as long as it takes me to find/save up for the smaller dual heat sinks and a second matching 6-core CPU?
Yes, but you should be able to get the whole tray with heat sinks and minimal Cpus for about $200. I’d wait till I could pop for that much and then go for your Intel Xeon X5690 3.46GHz SLBVX 6 Core CPU X58 LGA1366 Processors. Remember that the newer trays don’t work with the 2009. Also the CPUs on the 2009 need to be de-lided
