Hi everyone. I have a mid-2015 retina macbook pro that’s starting to run pretty poorly. Fans are spinning up constantly and it can’t keep up with the new work I’m doing (3d rendering, multitasking with multiple production programs). It’s got a 2.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB memory, and 250gb storage (not enough). The battery is also completely shot and would need to be replaced. Is this worth upgrading, or should I ditch it for the newest macbook pro? I’m mainly concerned about cost, but I also have a soft spot for this one and don’t really trust apple to release good devices anymore, so I’m skeptical about the new macbook pro.
First I think you still will want to have a backup system, just in case! So it does make sense fixing it. Do keep in mind this system has real ports! Vs the newer MacBook Pro’s which only have USB-C which does become a hinderance with USB-A, external displays and lastly has a useful power feed MagSafe. While you can get dongles and hubs and some-such to make everything work. So the things I would do to bring your baby back would be to get a replacement battery, Clean out all of the dust build up and clean and refresh the CPU’s thermal paste. Upgrading the SSD is also doable but for now hold off on that. As for buying a new system I would strongly recommend you take out the AppleCare+ Service contract as these newer systems are much more expensive to repair! And don’t forget everything is soldered down so think long and hard how much RAM & Storage you will likely need not only today but also a good four years out.
