Hello. I’m purchasing a 2011 mid July i5 model: HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0 500 GB Hard Drive Capacity Processor Speed 2.30 GHz Operating System macOS 10.13, High Sierra Maximum RAM Capacity 16 GB Model A1347 Intel Core i5 2nd Gen. RAM Size 16 GB I’m wondering if I’m able to replace the logic board with a newer model like a 2014 or 2018? Would this even help with speed, etc? I do plan on upgrading to SSD drive and memory. Thanks for any help. Greg
Not sure if the 2014/2018 boards will even fit as the 2014 lacks the FireWire 800 port and the 2018’s ports are located in a way that you can hardly use any of them unless you cut one massive hole in the back of your case. It obviously would help in speed as you literally have a 2014/18 Mac mini. Note that the 2014 models have soldered in RAM.
Sadly no, The board is not the same size as the 2018/19/20 systems. The 2011 and 2012 share the same case. It really doesn’t make economical sense doing this anyways. It would be cheaper just getting the shell and sundry parts and the proper logic board and power supply.
