Chosen Solution

I purchased the enclosure to add a second hard drive to my late 2011 15" Macbook Pro and I wanted to setup a Fusion drive using my 500GB SSD and another, larger capacity HDD. No matter what drive I drive I tired using in the optical bay, I kept getting errors creating the Fusion Drive (could not unmount because the drive is in use, input/output errors, etc). I originally had the second drive as a Time Machine backup disk (which worked fine) but that drive was starting to fail so I thought I’d migrate to a Fusion set up on the recommendation of a colleague. Has anyone had ANY success doing this and if so, how did you fix it? Is this just a limitation of using a hard drive connected to the optical drive controller?

I’m sorry to say you won’t be able to get a Fusion Drive setup with this system if you have a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive in the optical bay as this system has a known issue! Review the Red notation here: OWC Data Doubler - look under MacBookPro8,2 The issue has nothing to do with the adapter! The issue is within the optical drives SATA port logic. You’ll need to get a FIXED SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) SSD drive for the optical drive. You don’t want to switch the drives around as the HDD crash guard protection is only in the HD port. so if move it over and bang your system while the drive is in use you can damage it! Dammed and double dammed! OWC is one of the only sources for SATA II SSD’s. Keep in mind we are talking about a FIXED speed drive, not an Auto sense drive which most SSD’s are or are Fixed SATA III.
