So yesterday I tried to turn on my TV…the screen came on for a second and then turned itself off. Every time I tried to turn it on, the same thing happened and I couldn’t make the TV work at all. I figured it was just time to replace the TV. Bought a new TV and everything seemed fine. Then today, I tried to turn on the PS4…it beeped once and the light flashed for a second, but then it wouldn’t start. Tried several times but the same thing kept happening. Tried replacing the power cable, tried plugging it into a different socket, but didn’t make any difference. I have no idea what is happening. Surely it can’t be a coincidence that both of these electricals have stopped working in the last 24 hours? The TV and PS4 were both in perfect working order until yesterday. I bought a HDMI splitter a week ago and now I’m wondering if that could possibly cause this problem? Could something like that break electricals? Or could a multisocket extension lead cause this? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
Humans are pattern-recognizing machines… sometimes to a fault. It is entirely possible that the died for different reasons at about the same time. Statistically, it HAS to happen at some point. You just happened to be the lucky one. That’s not to say it can’t be related. If your HDMI splitter is powered, it’s entirely possible that it malfunctioned in a way that would send a surge of energy. I would think it more likely to take out a display than a source, but I could be wrong. I would not anticipate an multi-socket extension lead to be problematic in and of itself. I was once told in a professional environment that having a surge protector plugged into a surge protector can be problematic. But let’s focus on the PS4. You report “it beeped once and the light flashed for a second, but then it wouldn’t start.” I would like clarification on this. For me, the light coming on at all is it “starting.” As you know, normally when you press a PS4’s power button, you will hear a beep. Blue light comes on… are you saying it went back off by itself? If so, did it stay on for half a second or more like 3 seconds? If it was half a second, you’re looking at APU/RAM issue, likely caused by overheating and/or poor factory solder job (common in the 1000/1100s). If it was 3 seconds, it’s just the power supply. Which might suggest you experienced a surge that also took out the TV. Let me know which parts of this, if any, resonate with what you’re experiencing.
