I’ve have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro 15” retina laptop with BootCamp and Windows 10. it is primarily my Windows machine. I intend to replace its original 256GB SSD with a larger SSD as recommended in other discussions about choosing the right SSD. What software tools should I use to to backup and create image of my laptop so that I can restore the system on the new disk and expand the Windows partition. I wish to save myself from re-installing Windows with all my applications and having to reconfigure everything again.
You can actually clone your hard drive to a new one without hassles. You would need an external hard drive kit and the new drive. The disk utility can be used to do this or Carbon Copy Cloner. This software would probably give you more options than disk utility. Now the only part I don’t know about is the windows partition. I have never cloned a macbook with a windows partition but I believe it should work. There is a guide here on how to do this using disk utility: How to Clone an Existing Drive
Ideally you want to use BootCamp not CCC for backup as Apple drives now use a newer file system APFS that the older CCC won’t work with and the current one is still iffy! I would frankly just use the Migration Assistant tool as the better direction! With the new drive installed, formatted and the OS you are currently using installed at the very end of the process the installer will ask you if you have a system which you want to migrate from. In this case it will be the external case holding your original SSD.
