Hi All, The Trackpad on my mid-2012 11" MacBook Air stopped working. The battery doesn’t seem to be losing power. Other than opening up the computer and looking for swelling in the battery is there any easy way to diagnose the cause (i.e., is it a bad trackpad or a bad battery?). I’m hoping to order the right part (trackpad or new battery) before I open the computer up.

Well this is a no brainer, open it up and look, don’t guess. MacBook Air 11" Mid 2012 Lower Case Replacement

Hi I would buy a new track pad! then the battery . It could also be a dodgy ribbon? Ray

Does the trackpad have less travel, or a less clear and crisp click? If so, I would go the battery route first. If it does not show these symptoms or just doesn’t work at all, take it to an apple store. It is probably the trackpad itself. This can be replaced at home but a trackpad issue could be many different things, so I would take it to an apple store first.

This worked as first aid, now I have time to look around for a replacement battery. These are spacers (hair elastics) at the near corners of the trackpad to bend the battery out of the way of the trackpad. Additionally, I left the middle battery retaining screw loose, about 1.5 turns, to allow the battery to bend.
