Chosen Solution
Replaced wife’s iPhone 5s shattered glass with ifixit LCD Screen and Digitizer Full Assembly. Now the touchscreen is unresponsive along the bottom in certain apps. (I.E. can’t click the “message box” in Messages App.) It works fine outside the apps.
It’s most likely a defective screen. Try getting a replacement from iFixit.
