I was plugging a new device to my receiver with a Toslink optical cable but the plug would not go in. With a closer look, I pulled out of the optical input the little plastic cover (and the spring) which had broken off, normally protecting the optics. Now the Toslink is loose and will not stay plugged. There is only one optical input on my receiver and the other is a Mac Airport router without Toslink so I can’t see how the cover is normally held. Is there a way to put the spring and cover back in without changing the whole input ?

Hi, I think that the dust cover is an integral part of the connector so you may have to replace the entire unit. Here’s a link to a supplier but this doesn’t mean that these are suitable for your device. You may have to check the datasheet attached with each item to see if any are physically compatible with the receiver, i.e. actually fits in through the back cover and suits the board layout etc. What is the make and model number of the receiver? If the service manual for it can be found then hopefully it has a parts list which will make it easier to get a replacement.

I had the same problem, just fixed it today. Sorry I don’t have any pictures. This is provided that the ONLY problem is that the tiny little hinge pins on the Toslink lid have broken off. And that YOUR Toslink housing brand is similar to mine. It might be that the design of your type does not apply at all.

  1. Scavenge an old Toslink house (same brand) for the lid to repair another broken one: Open the lid by pushing it inward with a small tool, keep it open.Keeping it open, pull out the sheet metal spring under the lid with tweezers. You may have to use a small screwdriver to force it out, tweezers may be too weak.Study how the lid is sitting in the housing.Once the spring is out, you can hopefully remove the lid without breaking it.

You now have a good lid with both little hinge pins intact. Remove the metal spring from the broken housing by pulling it out with a tweezers. Without the (broken) lid it is not difficult. Please remember the orientation of the spring, so you don’t put it back upside down or backwards.Make sure the housing is cleaned from the old broken hinge pin(s).Carefully insert the lid, it should be easy with the metal spring removed.Keep the lid open with a small screwdriver etc.Carefully insert the spring into the small slit between the open lid and the housing. You may need to push the spring inward using a little force.Once the spring is in place it will close the lid once you release the screwdriver holding the lid in.Finished!
