Chosen Solution
While trying to remove the back glass of my iPhone XR, I nicked the battery a few times through the back of the phone and there are some silver bits that just slightly stick out, and there also appear to be shiny black bits under the exposed silver. There is a slight smell to it as well. I am not sure if it’s safe to use the battery, as it would seem like a waste of a good battery with these tiny scratches.
Replace it. Don’t even second guess it.
