I have a Dell Xps M1330, it works great but sometimes it shuts down by itself. When is powering on the display go all white for awhile. I try powering on several times until the display goes normal again. So I believe its the graphics chip that’s causing the problems. What can I do?
You can check the graphics chip by hooking up to an external monitor. But I believe your problem is a failing hard drive because of the white screen. I have a unit in right now that came in with only a white screen and the new hard drive fixed it. Try booting from your system installation disk and see if it fails, do this with and without the hard drive installed.
Shut the machine completely down. Then power it up while holding FN. It will go through a series of hardware tests. The only test that you may not see the results is the graphics test. If the card is bad you’ll here a series of beeps constantly chiming over and over.
